Out on the Waves

A confused young artist is torn between his family and his future in “Shelter,” a sensitive romantic drama from the writer and director Jonah Markowitz.

Set in the working-class San Pedro area of Los Angeles, the movie centers on Zach (Trevor Wright), a short-order cook. Between shifts Zach pursues a desultory relationship with his girlfriend, Tori (Katie Walder), and acts as surrogate father to his 5-year-old nephew, Cody (Jackson Wurth). His real passion, however, is painting, expressed in the stenciled graffiti he sprays on neighborhood buildings and in the art-school dreams that his selfish sister (Tina Holmes) is determined to sabotage.Everything changes when Zach finds himself drawn to Shaun (Brad Rowe), a confident writer and eager enabler of all of Zach’s passions. As the two hit the surf and Shaun’s mattress with equal enthusiasm, the movie’s abundance of tanned bodies, rolling waves and golden sunsets create an aesthetic of inoffensive hedonism that perfectly matches the subject matter. The first project produced by the film division of the here! cable television network, “Shelter” is finally less about erotic soul-searching than about defining one’s boundaries. And if at times the symbolism is a bit heavy-handed — and the ending is easily foreseen — strong performances and Joseph White’s burnished cinematography do much to atone. Coming out has rarely looked so pretty.

Story:

Forced to give up his dreams of art school in order to take care of his family, Zach (Trevor Wright) has become accustomed to a life where he neglects his own needs in favor of taking care of his older sister, Jeanne (Tina Holmes) and his nephew, Cody. When his best friend’s older brother, Shaun (Brad Rowe), returns home to cure a case of writer’s block, Shaun and Zach develop a friendship that develops into a true, intimate relationship. Shaun presses Zach to take control of his life, and to take ownership of his artwork. He also develops a strong bond with Cody, and Zach happily notices the positive effect Shaun’s attention has on him. As time progresses, however, a host of new issues come up. Zach struggles with his identity, his family, and friends, while trying to understand the new emotions Shaun has brought into his life. When the cat is let out of the bag, Jeanne threatens to take Cody away. Wanting nothing but the best for him, Zach is forced to decide between his pattern of always putting others’ desires first or fighting for what is really most important and appropriate for both his and Cody’s future.“With an outstanding script expertly brought to life through stellar performances and striking cinematography, Shelter is a gorgeous, captivating film that is, at its heart, a story about family." - Kirsten Schaffer, OUTFEST.      

         很久没有看G movie咯， 实在无聊的时候，就下了几部自己没有看过的新片。Shelter 的片名被翻译的很雷，我就不翻译了，还是英文原意才可以表达影片真实的情感。阳光、沙滩、性感的身体、再加上青涩的、矛盾的主人公的变化，让我可以很平静的把这部片子看完，心里没有一点点的哀伤，毕竟，他们走到了一起，happy together。也许，以前的同志电影更多的用悲剧结尾，让人记忆犹新。然而，像本片这样，用温情来结束，更能够体现时代的变迁。     

        本片讲述的一个典型工人阶层的男生选择自己未来道路的故事，美丽动人的女朋友并不能真正打动他。最好兄弟的哥哥从LA回来后，让他找到了自我，找到了人生的避风港湾。未来的抉择在自己手中，未来的生活也需要两个爱人共同去创造。最温馨的一幕就是他的外甥Cody因为常年获得主人公Zach的照顾，而管Zach叫爸爸。影片结束的时候，Zach，Shaun，Cody 三个人在海边练习冲浪，让人不禁感受到真实幸福其实就在自己的手掌之中。第一次写很烂的影评，还是大家自己去看吧。
